CQC Interview Preparation: What Applicants Should Expect

For many applicants, the interview stage is the part of the CQC registration process that causes the most anxiety, yet with proper CQC interview preparation it can become a straightforward opportunity to demonstrate genuine understanding of the role and the service. Both nominated individuals and registered managers are typically required to attend an interview as part of the fit and proper person assessment, and knowing what to expect makes a significant difference to how confidently applicants perform on the day.

What CQC is looking for during the interview

A registered manager interview generally focuses on the applicant’s understanding of the fundamental standards, their approach to leadership and risk management, and their knowledge of the specific service they will be running. Questions often explore how the applicant would respond to safeguarding concerns, manage staffing pressures, or handle a deteriorating quality issue within the service. A nominated individual interview tends to focus more on governance oversight, how the individual supervises regulated activities across the organisation, and how they would escalate concerns to the provider’s board or senior leadership. In both cases, CQC is assessing not just technical knowledge but judgement, honesty and self awareness, including a willingness to acknowledge what the applicant does not yet know.

For providers, this stage matters because a poor interview outcome can delay registration significantly, even where the rest of the application is strong. Applicants who have not thought through practical scenarios in advance, or who are unfamiliar with the specific Statement of Purpose and policies for the service, can struggle to answer confidently even when they have relevant experience. Preparation is not about rehearsing scripted answers, but about ensuring applicants genuinely understand the service, its risks and their own responsibilities well enough to discuss them naturally and credibly. For larger organisations, more than one member of the senior team may also be involved in related conversations with CQC, so it helps to agree in advance who will lead on which areas of discussion.

  • Read the service’s Statement of Purpose and key policies thoroughly before the interview.
  • Prepare examples from previous experience that demonstrate leadership, safeguarding awareness and risk management.
  • Practise talking through how you would respond to common scenarios, such as a safeguarding referral or a staffing shortfall.
  • Be ready to explain your understanding of the fundamental standards in your own words.
  • Reflect honestly on areas of development, since CQC values self awareness over an appearance of having all the answers.
  • Allow enough time beforehand to review recent changes to CQC’s assessment framework and guidance.
